GO GREEN FOR THE HOLIDAYS

GO GREEN FOR THE HOLIDAYS For the year's most festive season, GREEN conjures a feeling of prosperity and well-being. With make-up it adds a rich effervescence that symbiotic with ethnic skintones. After all, there will be no brown without green. - EH

HOT RED LIPS

Throughout the millennia, no matter what method women used to redden their lips, the goal was always to showcase an attention-getting red…

Holiday Glamour by Ephraim Hunte

Pretty and practical are my buzz words for this holiday season. The intent is not meant to be overly extravagant, but by adding a little decorative flamboyance to your face and body, you will be ready for an unforgettable night out on the town. The season calls for festive elegance, so, bolder and more colourful hues on eyes and lips will enhance the spicy skin tones and exotic beauty of the Caribbean woman. Your makeup for this special look will require a few new trade secrets for eyes, lips and cheeks and a bonus tip from hairstylist Joey Smith will be thrown in to add the finishing touch to your holiday glamour.

Sultry Eyes
For the holiday’s look, dark eyes will definitely play up the season’s sophistication and you can learn to skilfully apply your favourite blue or green eyeshadows on your eyelids to complement your one-of–a-kind designer’s frock.

Get the look:
  • There is one highly guarded secret among makeup gurus when using colours like green and blue in your eye makeup application (without looking like you just landed from Mars or Venus). The trick is in mixing the cool hues with warm, neutral tones (e-mail for more info). Finish off the eyes with a black, navy, or forest green eye liner and three to four coats of mascara.

Flushed cheeks
Your cheek colour is the fulcrum that balances your eye and lip colour. Select your blush colour to balance the colour of your lips and eyes while enhancing your cheeks.

Get the look:
  • To prevent overly done cheeks that can ruin the balance in your makeup, first dip your blush brush in your powdered blush and then in loose translucent powder. Apply on your cheeks (starting from your cheek bone area close to your ear) for a subtle effect. Repeat, if you need a little more colour.

Vivid lips
Outlined lips can be generously painted in your favourite red, cranberry or burgundy lip colour, but in creamy to matte formulas for a rich lustrous texture.

Get the look:
  • Line your lips with a lip liner close to your lipstick colour, smudging the liner to prevent a hard edge. To prolong the lasting effect of your lip colour, dab on some “light” or ‘no-colour’ translucent powder on your lips after your first coat of lipstick. Press lips together and re-apply a second coat of lipstick. This layering technique will ensure a longer lasting wear.

Sculpted coiffeur
Hairstylist Joey Smith dares anyone to not wear an up-do for their holiday extravaganza. “Think about glamour, sophistication and elegance and enter the arena of the celebrity woman,” is Joey’s advice for the holiday’s look.

Get the look:
  • Joey first blow-dried our model’s shoulder length hair. He sectioned the hair and used a bumper iron to curl the ends. Her hair was then wrapped to create a smooth front, gathering the sections at the back and twisting and pinning the sections to create an exotic, classic chignon. Hair was then lightly sprayed and bumped with the barrel of the bumper iron for a smooth, clean finish.
Model, Salena Ali is sure to make a lasting impression this holiday season in her Zadd and Eastman Couture design with equally creative applications of makeup and a sculpted, dimensional, up-do coiffeur. Eyeshadow colours in Green, Gold and Copper created a harmonious complement to her red dress.

MASCARA SANITIZATION - Ephraim Hunte says Just think about it!

In addition to the hygiene benefit of using rubbing alcohol to suspend or eradicate mascara contamination, we need to consider the function and purpose of the design of the mascara spoolie or applicator in high end expensive brands.  These mascara wands are likely to go unused because as recommended by many, the disposable mascara spoolie is the most effective preventative method for product contamination.  Here’s the problem.  Why buy such an expensive mascara with its unique applicator, designed for a specific lash service, only to be advised to use instead, a disposable applicator (usually of an inferior design), as the solution for product hygiene?  Aren’t we really paying the big bucks for the functionality of these specialty designed mascara applicators?

Another question.  When using a disposable spoolie, is it to be used for just one dip and then discarded, or is it to be used repeatedly, in and out of the receptacle, until the lashes are coated, after which it is discarded?  The latter raises hygiene issues!

Mascara companies invest millions of dollars to competitively design their spoolies for voluminizing effects or for getting the product to the shortest cilia (eyelashes).  For this reason, the disposables defeat the very logic that governs a mascara designer’s intent for style and dedicated function.

The mascara wand sanitization technique solves two problems.  It protects the product from contamination and offers the added bonus of eliminating the unnecessary expense of generic mascara spoolie disposables.

Teen Pro MUA Jessyka Gabriel

Jessyka Gabriel was only 15 when she graduated as a Professional Makeup Artist at Ephraim Hunte International Makeup Academy. Yesterday her story was featured in the Trinidad Express - Women Express. Read all about it... http://www.trinidadexpress.com/woman-magazine/MAKE-UP_PASSION-132360438.html

MAKE-UP PASSION

By Natalie Morales

It's easy to feel Gabriel's passion for the one thing she loves the most in the entire world… Make-up! She was still 15 when she graduated from the Ephraim Hunte International Makeup Academy (EHIMA), Class of June 2011 completing the Advanced Make-up Artistry course in fine style.

"I've always loved make-up. It all started with me and my mom's cosmetics… I'd reach for her make-up ever since I started tiptoeing and grabbing for things." Today nothing has changed much, except that now Gabriel wheels her own professional make-up kit - a true indication that her dream is finally becoming a reality.

Though she toyed with products and colours through the years, she was only allowed to wear make-up about a year ago. "I wear it to enhance my natural beauty basically but I also just love experimenting and having fun with colours; my favourite colours are greens and pinks." Although she loves these fun and flirty colours, her personal 'pet' is the 'smoky' look. "I love the way it looks on me!" Gabriel's 'smoky eye' technique in a nutshell? "It's dark colours wrapped around the entire eye. And blended well."
Her natural sense of style is certainly not a secret. The Form Four student is quickly becoming popular for her new craft at St Joseph's Convent, St Joseph. "Whenever my friends have to go out, they call me to do their make-up… They have all solicited my services for their weddings in the future, but alhough she is immersed into the world of make-up artistry, her education certainly does not take second place.
Gabriel has managed to keep ahead in her classes. Some of the subjects she continues to excel in include Biology, Chemistry, Business and Spanish. "I'm able to remain focused because of the support and love I get at home and also from family and friends", she says with smiling yet tearful eyes.

Although it has been just mere weeks since graduating from EHIMA, Gabriel already boasts of having had some high profile make-up projects already added to her portfolio. At 15 years she has done make-up for CariVele magazine in the Bridal 2011 issue and also assisted in the COSTAATT 2011 catalogue make-up looks. "Patrons are often shocked when they hear my age." At this young stage in her life; she has already created lasting impressions with patrons she has made up. "They would say that I'm a good listener, I'm creative and have good work ethics," she added.

Managing Director of Ephraim Hunte Makeup Academy (EHIMA), Ephraim Hunte believes that this is just the beginning for the very promising youngster, as her positive attitude, punctuality and 'cleanliness' set her apart. She attributes this to the professional training she received in EHIMA's Advanced Make-up Artistry course. While some argue that simply the love for make-up is enough to excel in the business, Gabriel swears by professional training. "I've learnt so many new techniques, from Facial Mathematics to Eye Theory to different skin types and undertones. You must learn it the right way!"

Gabriel hopes to have her own signature make-up technique some day, as well as her own line of cosmetic products. She would like to make a mark in make-up sanitisation following the stringent hygiene regimen of her make-up mentor, Ephraim Hunte. "It's the other thing that I'm known for besides always being on time… having clean make-up." This conscientious young lady has huge plans for the future. She's got her heart set on becoming a celebrity make-up artist and confesses that she would love to work with International celebrities Kim Kardashian and Ashley Greene.

She however knows only too well that being really good doesn't come easy, "I want to keep growing… it takes hard word to be the best." Plus, she certainly has a plan in store to keep ahead of the competition, "I intend to keep practising, following up on the latest trends, upgrading my techniques and learning from other great make-up artists like Mr. Hunte…" Traveling and becoming a respected International make-up artist is only inevitable now.

To the woman who says that she's not into make-up, Gabriel's take is that most women shun away for make-up because of not knowing how to apply it. "Don't dismiss it until you try it," And to any young person who would like to become a professional make-up artist, her advice… "If you love it, go for it. I did!"

Brow Beauty by Ephraim Hunte

If the adage, “the eyes are the windows to the soul” holds true, then eyebrows are the window frames.
So, if your eyebrows are unkempt or badly shaped, they will certainly detract from your beautiful eyes.
Eyebrows that are too high will give you a permanently surprised look. Too low and straight brows can cover up your brow bone area and make you look masculine.

Brows drooping at the outer end can make you look sad. Those that are too high at the outer half can give you an extraterrestrial appearance. So what shape should you have, especially if your virgin brows are bushy or connected above your nose (uni-brow)?

Even though trends sometimes dictate a particular shape, there is a standard formula that governs a personal shape and style for each individual. The result is fabulous looking brows that will enhance your eyes and eye makeup.
Follow these basic rules and your brows will always look fantastic and sexy, no matter what’s in style.

Shaping
The most important element of shaping brows is a well-placed arch.

1.To select the most appropriate point for your arch, envision a line from the corner of your nostril along the pupil of your eye. The point where the line meets your eyebrow is the most suitable for the arch. Brush your brows straight up and use a white eye pencil to draw the line of your arch. Remove the hairs that fall under the white pencil mark

2. To find where your eyebrows should begin, draw a line from the corner of your nostril along your inner eye corner. The point where the line meets your eyebrows is good for starting your brows

3.The tail end of the brows can be determined with a line from the corner of your nostril along the outer corner of your eye. Where the line meets the brow is where the eyebrows should end.l Once you have established the position of your brows, removing unwanted hairs to give you clean brow lines should be the next step.

How to Test Your Makeup Foundation

Ephraim Hunte says: Contrary to popular belief, the wrist and jaw-line are a no-no for testing your foundation, if your skin colouring is brown to dark. Testing on the wrist and jaw-line is all well and good for very fair complexions, as the skin tones are generally similar all over. MAKEUP ARTIST Guru Ephraim Hunte affirms that the neck area is the best choice for foundation testing, as this area is least affected by the sun and by the environment. This ensures that there’s unison in skin tone from the fore head-hairline to the collar bone.

Sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen

The long weekend’s here! I’m sure you’ve got plans to head to the beach. Well, Makeup Guru Ephraim Hunte shares some tips and cautions that may help to minimize the consequences of sunburn, sunstroke and dehydration especially during this Easter weekend..

Face and body

Moisturize and hydrate skin thoroughly before going to bed. After bathing, apply face moisturiser and body lotion on damp skin (this helps to seal in additional moisture). Re-apply when moisture has evaporated. Repeat in the morning.

Face/foundation

Clean skin thoroughly and hydrate with a good SPF moisturiser (blot off excess if face is of an oily skin type). Use a foundation with SPF.

Body

Sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen

Try the higher numbers like SPF30, SPF40, and SPF45 on your body. The higher the number ratings, the longer the protection.
Note: Higher SPF numbers simply mean the product will give longer sunblock protection. Repeat sunblock application on your shoulders, back and legs every two to four hours.

Lip protection

The delicate skin of the lips can easily become sunburned. Use a lip balm with SPF, followed by a lipstick with SPF.

MAKECLASSIC MAKEOVER starring EHP Vamoose Concealer®

Hyper-pigmentation (the darkening of skin colour due to excess melanin production) varies from mole-like, freckled and mottled marring to large, patchy discolourations.

Some conditions are easily treated with skin lighteners like hydroquinone—cocktail formulas. Others require laser therapies, skin peels and skin-resurfacing treatments but are usually associated with skin traumas and side effects, not to mention the exorbitant related costs.

However, make-up offers a quick-fix remedy that’s painless, inexpensive and can add a touch of elegance to the overall picture. And, if by chance you are not fully satisfied, all you’ll need to do is simply WASH IT OFF!

Cover-up Technique

One of the best corrective make-up formulas available in T&T for cosmetically camouflaging or concealing hyper-pigmentation is the EHP Vamoose Concealer®. It’s a water-resistant, smudge-resistant formula that provides long-lasting, natural-looking coverage. Here’s a make-up technique that will offer an effective cover-up application for moderate and severe hyper-pigmentation conditions.

* Start on a well-cleansed skin

* Select a shade of EHP Vamoose Concealer® that blends into your natural skin tone (Vamoose comes in customized blends)

* With a cosmetic sponge or fingers, first apply the EHP Vamoose Concealer® to area of hyper-pigmentation

* Apply a light application of  Setting Powder to lightly bind the EHP Vamoose Concealer®

* Stipple on (a patting action) a second layer of EHP Vamoose Concealer® over the first layer and proceed with a light application over the rest of the face. If the hyper-pigmented area is not a severe discolouration, you can use a cream foundation instead (as close to your natural skin tone as possible) for your second layering application

* Apply another dusting of Setting Powder with a powder brush. Then press on loose Setting Powder with a puff for a stronger and longer-lasting set. Do not rub the powder onto the skin. This might dislodge your first concealed application

* Use your powder brush to dust off the excess powder left over from the effects of the puff.

Mission Accomplished! Flawless coverage that’s not cakey or mask-like in appearance.
Important Tips

* Never go outside without a suitable sun-block and avoid the sun during high peak ultraviolet radiation hours of 10 am to 4 pm.

* Make-up will not only help to camouflage the condition and enhance your looks, but may also contribute sun-blocking qualities for added skin protection.

Medical Data

Nevus of Ota is a rare hyper-pigmentation skin marring that usually appears on one side of the face as bluish-greenish-to-gray speckled or mottled patches. It primarily affects the forehead, temple, cheek area, or periorbital skin (around the eye). From a clinical perspective, skin specialists have sanctioned the use of Q-switched ruby laser therapy as a safe modality that’s an effective non-scarring treatment of nevus of ota.

Mascara Sanitization

MAKEUP ARTIST Guru Ephraim Hunte has created his own foolproof technique to sanitize mascara wands and prevent mascara contaminated during and after makeup applications. How to:  Apply rubbing alcohol 90% to a sheet of paper towel and swipe the used-mascara-wand through the alcohol saturated paper towel, before re-entering the wand back into the mascara tube. This will not only sanitize the wand but also introduce the anti-bacterial properties of the rubbing alcohol in the mascara formula. A great remedy to conjunctivitis (red eye).

Q&A with Ephraim Hunte You asked… He answered!!

Q - I am concerned with the little moles on my cheekbones. Is there a way make-up could be applied that would either conceal or minimize the sight of the moles?—Joanne

A - A lot depends on the nature of the moles. If they are just brown spots on your skin, a cream foundation or a powder-to-cream foundation formula will give satisfactory concealing results. If in some places there are large brown patches, try spot-treating the area with your foundation, i.e., pat a little excess foundation only on the places that need the extra coverage—do not repeat over the entire face. If your moles are raised above the skin, foundation may not cover them adequately. If you find them unsightly, a dermatologist can advise you on laser and other treatments that can erase your eyesore.

Q - I am writing in the hope that you can help me in some way with my problem. I have black marks on my legs from scars caused by mosquito bites and cuts and I have been trying for years to get them removed. I have tried cocoa butter, bleaching creams, even laser treatment. With the laser treatment, I guess I did see some kind of improvement but it was too expensive. I am currently using vitamin E oil on my legs but I was wondering if you could suggest something that would help lighten and even. This is something that has made me self-conscious and uncomfortable for years.—LD

A - The reason for your dark scarring is a condition called hyper-pigmentation—a darkening of the skin caused by excess melanin production. It has nothing to do with a person having “bad skin” but is usually a genetic problem. People who scar with dark discoloration may have an immediate relative, who is dark in complexion either on the father’s or mother’s side of the family. To treat the scarring problem, hydroquinone preparations are used. Popular formulations with hydroquinone, cortisone and retin-a offer very effective results but because of their steroid component, should only be used under the supervision of a doctor/dermatologist. Other preparations that cause skin lightening contain azealic acid, kojic acid, salicyclic acid, glycolic acid and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), but are not as effective as the hydroquinone cocktails.

Colours in eye make-up

e.

When colour is intended to make a statement one major question takes precedence, that is, what is the deciding factor that dictates which colour dominates at a particular point in time? For me, it is the colour that occupies the largest area or commands the boldest or brightest eye-catching activity. For example, if you are wearing a red dress, then red will be the dominant hue that will challenge any other colour that you use, from your head to your shoes. If, however, your dress is white or black, then the colour you use on your lips or the colour of the irises of your eyes or your hair can make the dominant statement that will dictate your choice in eye make-up.

On darker complexions though, eye shadow colours in green or blue have the tendency to draw out an ashy appearance in the skin. Incorporating a warm hue (another word for colour) in your make-up, like rust (i.e.from the red family), can add balance and create a flattering effect.

Eyes
  •  If eyes are brown or hazel, a splash of green or blue will compliment and intensify the colour of the iris.
  •  If eyes are green or blue, trust the warmth of rust, cranberry, reds or orange-reds.
  •  In cases when the irises are dark, select your colours to complement your hair, lipstick or clothing.
  •
Hair
  • Reddish-brown hair colour is complemented with navy or blue-greens.
  • Wine, burgundy or eggplant hair colour is complemented with a splash of gold, violet, fuchsia or blues.
  • Clothing
  • If your outfit is in the colour family of red or orange—gold, peach, rust, brown, green, blue.
  • If you are wearing yellow, chartreuse or blue-green colours—gold, lilac, purples, burgundy, brick.
  • For your navy, pink, dark green or grey outfit selections—pink, cranberry, rust/copper, fuchsia, or burgundy.
Note: If you are wearing black or white outfits, wear eye colours that will complement your lip colour, hair colour or the colour of your iris.
